THE RESULTS: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chip maker, says quarterly earnings fell 7.7 percent, but it predicted solid growth for the year.
THE OUTLOOK: The company expects a boost from stronger-than-anticipated demand for smartphones and tablet computers coming from the U.S. and China.
ABOUT THE COMPANY: It makes chips under contract for other companies and supplies chips for the iPhone and the iPad, among other devices. TSMC has been raising its investments in new technology over the past two years as South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. is vying with it to supply iPhone and iPad components.
