Ashton Kutcher tipped to play Steve Jobs in upcoming biopic

In October last year, fans of both film and the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs received some good news, as Sony announced it was in the process of acquiring the rights to Walter Isaacson’s biography and that Aaron Sorkin was being courted to adapt it for the screen.

Sorkin, fresh from his success on The Social Network, has since said he’s “strongly considering” taking on the writing duties, but there has been no firm commitment from him, or an announcement made by the studio yet. The film is still listed as in-development by IMDb.com, and has a tentative 2014 release date attached.

However, it’s not just Sony looking to bring Steve Jobs to the big screen, as over the weekend, industry magazine Variety published details on an independent film which would deal with Jobs’ journey from a “wayward hippie to co-founder of Apple.”

Attached to play Steve Jobs is none other than star of What Happens in Vegas and Two and a Half Men, Ashton Kutcher, a choice possibly made due to the visual similarity between the two, rather than his previous work.

While many have been quick to dismiss this as a bad idea, there’s a chance he may be great — witness Hayden “Anakin Skywalker” Christensen’s performance as Stephen Glass in 2003′s Shattered Glass, for a good example of a mediocre actor doing sterling work playing a complex, real-life figure.

Interestingly, a thread started in October last year on Kutcher’s IMDB.com page, correctly called the possibility of the actor playing a young Steve Jobs. He also appeared on our own list of potential actors to take on the role, along with Jim Caviezel and Joaquin Phoenix.

Currently titled “Jobs,” the film is scheduled to start shooting in May. Will the coverage it has gained spur Sony on to sign Sorkin and release details on its own, more official biopic?
