Tulsa Is 14th City to Proclaim June 30 Social Media Day






Tulsa, Okla., has officially named June 30 , making it the 14th city in the world to recognize the day.

Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett signed the proclamation earlier this week after Cheryl Lawson, the organizer of , submitted a request for the proclamation in April.


The city has been celebrating Social Media Day since Mashable launched the event in 2010.

Tulsa has a vibrant social media community that meets monthly. The group regularly holds events and conferences, and participates in community projects. " has grown into so much more than a Meetup group," Lawson said. "People are just really into social here."


Tulsa recently made the list of top social media cities. It was ranked No. 22 in a that compared the goverment websites of 75 of the largest U.S. cities. The Social Media Day proclamation is just another step forward for this growing social media community.



To celebrate Social Media Day 2012, Tulsa is holding a Meetup of about 50 people at . They will be hanging out, eating pizza and discussing how people can put social media to work every day in whatever they do. Conversation will also focus on how social media can be used to help out local businesses.
