Twitter users freak out over $800 iPhone 5 rumor

Don't worry, Apple's next smartphone won't set you back eight bills

What will the iPhone 5 cost? Well, those that follow this type of thing — like us — know that such information won't be revealed until Apple announces the device a little later this year. But that hasn't stopped Twitter users from working themselves into a tizzy over a rumor that the next iconic handset will cost a whopping $800.

Ok, so calling it a "rumor" is even being a little generous, given that the source of this price is almost impossible to track down. Our best guess is that it originated on an obscure Chinese auction site where a purported iPhone 5 prototype was up for sale. But once Twitter users got ahold of the lofty figure, its origin story really didn't matter.

"$800 iPhone 5" is currently a top worldwide trending topic, with hundreds of users berating Apple for charging such a massive premium for its next phone. Using the hashtag #800DollarsForAniPhone, Tweeters are demanding that for such a price, the new handset better "fix breakfast" and "be waterproof, fireproof, crackproof, dirtproof, and bulletproof."

Of course, there's absolutely no way the next iPhone — whether it's called the iPhone 5 or not — will set you back $800. Sure, you could purchase the top-of-the-line model, off contract, and perhaps approach that lofty price tag, but for the vast majority of users who will buy the phone through a carrier, the price will likely fall in line with Apple's past smartphones — usually between $200 and $400 depending on your storage needs.
