Ask.com Launches an App for Instant Polling

Ask.com is launching an iPhone app on Tuesday that experiments with a new question-and-answer format for the company: quick polls.

The app, Pollroll, makes it easy for users to publish and respond to quick questions, such as "Last night's shirt, ok to recycle?," "Where is the best party at tonight?" and "What should I order at Franklin BBQ?" Poll creators designate answer options (respondents also have the option to leave comments) and can include a photo if they choose. After they publish the poll, they can breakout the responses from everyone, people nearby or just their friends.

Ask.com CEO Doug Leeds told Mashable the Q&A; platform's current open-ended question forums already get used to conduct polls. The app, which launches two days before South by Southwest Interactive, formalizes the function.

“SXSW is the perfect testing ground for us to play with mobile polling functionality," Leeds said in a statement, "ultimately shaping how these features are integrated across both our flagship mobile app and site.”

The app was developed at a company cross-department hackathon.

If you've used Thumb, which is made by a startup called Opinionaided, you'll understand that quick polls can be engaging. A similar polling app, Thumb, claims its average user spends 3.5 hours browsing though its quick polls each month.

The major difference between Thumb and Ask.com, of course, is that Ask.com isn't a startup. It boasts 100 million users. If all goes well at South by Southwest and Ask.com indeed extends the concept to its established properties, there are enough users already on board to make "quick" polling live up to its name.
