CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia's prime minister says relations with China has not been harmed by banning Chinese technology giant Huawei from bidding to help build a nationwide high-speed Internet network.
A newspaper reported this week that the government told Huawei Technologies Ltd. late last year that it was barred from bidding for work on the 36 billion Australian dollar ($38 billion) network amid concern about cyber attacks traced to China.
Prime Minister Julie Gillard told reporters Thursday the government's decision was correct and had not broken any trade rules.
She says China and Australia disagree on the decision, but it would be a "very grave error" to think that disagreement affected relations.
