Microsoft Sends Invitations to Windows 8 Launch Event

Microsoft has already said publicly that Windows 8 will officially launch on Oct. 26, with a big event in New York City the day before. Now it's in writing: Microsoft just sent invitations to the media for the event, to be held at Pier 57 in Manhattan.

The event will be fairly lengthy, it appears, with Microsoft allotting a full five hours for it. Company CEO Steve Ballmer will certainly be there along with key executives. There will also no doubt be several hardware partners to show off the various Windows 8 devices that have been unveiled over the past few months.

One of the devices that will certainly be present is Microsoft Surface -- the invitation says "Including a Microsoft Surface Reception." Microsoft is expected to finally reveal pricing of its homegrown tablet that surprised the tech world this summer, either at the event or earlier.

At the same time, Microsoft is expected to offer more details on the rollout of Windows RT devices. While the company has detailed how the ARM-based version of Windows will work and relate to the main platform, Windows RT devices have yet to appear outside of announcements or strictly controlled demos. It's still not known whether those devices will launch at the same time as Windows 8.

The Oct. 26 launch is the final step in Windows 8's official development cycle. The operating system was first shown publicly at Microsoft's BUILD developers conference last fall and has since gone through a developer preview, a consumer preview, a release preview and RTM (release to manufacturing). The launch is the general release, when it'll be on store shelves.
