Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing made the first mass-produced electric guitar in 1950, but the inventor of the Telecaster didn't actually know how to play it.
Leo Fender was an engineer by trade, whose early career was focused on radio repair and amplification systems.
Reddit users discussed a dubious source of this claim, but Fender's own website confirms that "Ironically, the shy, somewhat introverted inventor wasn’t a guitar player."
