NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Dozens of people were arrested Tuesday in New York City and around the world in a coordinated crackdown on financial cybercrime.
The suspects, arrested after a two-year investigation, allegedly stole credit card and bank data and exchanged it with each other online. News of the arrests was reported earlier by the Associated Press and confirmed by a source familiar with the investigation, who described the operation as "massive."
Law enforcement officials accessed the suspects' communications in a sting operation by setting up a fake online forum. When the targets used it to communicate, investigators tracked their conversations.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan declined to comment. Prosecutors are expected to publicly announce the operation and release further details later on Tuesday.
