Coming Soon to Draw Something: Ads you draw yourself

The next time you're asked to draw a Big Mac, it's probably because McDonalds paid for the word to be included

Without a doubt, Pictionary clone Draw Something is one of the most popular mobile games currently available, occasionally beating out Angry Birds for the top spot in the Apple App Store. Now that the game is owned by social gaming heavyweight Zynga, users are starting to see some changes — most notably, the inclusion of ads that you have to draw yourself.

In the game, players have to choose one of three words of varying difficulty to draw in each round. Zynga has been testing the inclusion of various brands such as Nike and Kentucky Fried Chicken as words in the game to test players' reactions. Apparently, that has proven successful — according to Zynga mobile VP Dan Porter, "people loved to draw the Colonel and bags of Doritos."

We're not sure that players are really that excited about ads making their way into the gaming experience, but advertisers appear to be. Already, the NHL has paid to have hockey-related terms included in the game, such as puck, hat trick, and slap shot. The league has been encouraging players to send in their best drawings, featuring many of them on its Pinterest page.
