VIENNA (AP) — Austria's state broadcaster has begun shutting down its Facebook pages after the country's broadcast regulators ruled that its statutes do not allow it a presence on the social media site.
Broadcaster ORF's sites were being taken off line Friday to comply with a decision by the Federal Communications Senate, Austria's highest broadcast regulator.
The panel earlier this week upheld a November decision by KommAustria, the regulator of first instance, that found ORF's Facebook presence gave it an unfair competitive edge against private broadcast and print media. The KommAustria ruling was sparked by a complaint raised last year by Austrian newspaper publishers.
ORF executives have announced they would fight the decision up to Austria's highest courts.
