Since its release two weeks ago, Apple Maps has been criticized for being inferior to its predecessor, Google Maps. Unsurprisingly, other competitors are taking advantage of the situation, using it as an opportunity to highlight their own solutions.

The good news for iOS 6 users is that many of the alternatives in the App Store work quite well. Apple has chosen to highlight apps from companies such as MapQuest, Bing and Garmin, but there are lots of solutions -- free and paid -- that can work in the interim.

In my experience, MapQuest's app [iTunes link] is a surprisingly robust, free solution. I've had plenty of bad experiences with MapQuest in the web browser, but on my iPhone, the app is a nice alternative to Google Maps and superior to Apple Maps.

What apps are you using in lieu of Apple Maps? Android and Windows Phone users, now is your time to gloat.
