News Summary: More Oracle setback in Google case

ANOTHER SETBACK: A federal judge in San Francisco undermines a central part of Oracle Corp.'s multimillion dollar case against Google Inc. over its Android mobile software.

PREVIOUSLY: A jury found Google infringed on Oracle's copyright in using programming codes known as APIs, but it wasn't able to agree on whether Google was covered under "fair use" protections in U.S. law. As a result, Oracle wasn't able to extract huge sums from Google.

THURSDAY'S DECISION: The judge says Google's use of the APIs wasn't covered by copyright law in the first place. Oracle says it will appeal the ruling.
